What is an Obligate Carnivore?
Friday, September 16th, 2011Cats are obligate carnivores. In a nutshell, this means that cats have to eat meat. Unlike humans, who actually started off eating fruit but then progressed onto meat, cats have evolved with a very linear diet i.e. they have evolved to eat other animals.
This means that their physiology is adapted to eating meat, as opposed to food from other sources. However, whilst cats are obligate carnivores this does not entirely rule out other kinds of food, which can be fed to your pet as a supplement to a primarily meat based diet.
In fact, it is important to avoid a completely protein based diet. Whilst protein is essential for your cat, even more so than for humans, it is far from being the only compound that your cats need to stay in tip-top condition. At Hills Pet we sell high quality, complete cat foods that carry other important nutrients such as tourine.
Whilst when compared with human nutrition Hills Pet is very one-dimensional, this doesnt mean that variety isnt important. You should ideally feed your cat wet and dry food, as, for example, a dry food is very beneficial to your cats dental health (which is very important considering that they are obligate carnivores.)
Nutrition becomes doubly important when were talking about kitten nutrition. Kittens grow very rapidly, and require a huge boost of nutrients if they are to reach maturity in full health. At Hills Pet you can find lots of cat foods that are specially formulated for growing and young cats.
